July 31, 1923: The Museum of the City of New York opens

The Museum of the City of New York opens in Gracie Mansion on the Upper East Side. The museum moves in 1932 to its current home at Fifth Avenue and 103rd Street, while Gracie Mansion becomes the mayor's official residence in 1942.
